CarbFix is an industrial process to extract CO2 and other gases from emissions. The CarbFix project looks at the possibility of absorbing CO2 before it reaches the atmosphere and instead pumping it down into the ground, where it is mineralised. Towards the end of 2018, 52,000 tonnes of volcanic gases from the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant had been captured and put in the ground. 2/3 was CO2 and 1/3 was hydrogen sulphide, which represents a total 40 per cent of the power plant emissions.
