Aalto University is known for its cross-disciplinary approach and is home to the NODUS – Sustainable Design Research Group. The group specialises in design solutions, business models and innovations that support sustainability. Nodus is also a pioneer in the development of practically relevant theories for designing sustainability transitions. The central concepts for the group is socio-ecological-technological system transformations, sustainability science, practice theory, self-organizing systems, participatory and collaborative design and futures studies.
Nodus regularly organizes public events at Design Museum Helsinki – called NODUSTalk. The talks brings together researchers and practitioners on topics relevant to design and sustainability with the aim of contributing to public debate on how human societies can mitigate further environmental, societal damage and adapt to the already locked-in impacts of the damage that has been caused.
